When we’re down, we all rely on friends and family to bring us back to life. Sure, that helps, but lately, I’ve found it’s the unexpected acts of kindness or compliments from strangers that can really make you feel like a million bucks—because they’re just that: unexpected.

Maybe it was the guy who approached me while I was on a lackluster date recently to tell me that I’m beautiful and that if the guy I was with wasn’t into me, he wasn’t worth my time. Side note: It turns out, he wasn’t.

Maybe it was the cabbie George, who, upon hearing that I was single, offered to set me up with a friend (in a totally non-creepy way, trust me) and then didn’t charge me for my cab fare, saying, “You’re adorable. It’s on me.”

Obviously, these were two little pick-me-ups. When I need them, I know my friends are there to offer a shoulder to cry on. But it’s the surprises in life that can really make you smile sometimes.
